The Great Plains Chapter of the NRHS was organized as a not for profit corporation in 1988 and has over 150 members.
Meetings are held on the third Sunday monthly at Stuhr Museum in Grand Island NE. Programs include speakers from railroads, railroad historians, railroad authors and photographers plus historical and contemporary audio-visuals. An annual banquet is held at the Burlington depot in Grand Island in February.
Two Union Pacific cabooses and a Rock Island coach plus MoW equipment and Burlington dispatching boards are part of the historical collection.
The "Diamond" newsletter is published monthly in full color.
Awards are presented annually to individuals and groups active in preserving railroad history.
Each spring members can participate in a field trip exploring ghost railroads, abandoned railroad right of ways and railway facilities.
Over the years several excurisions by train and bus were sponsored to Colorado, New Mexico, Wyoming, Kansas, Missouri and Mexico.
The Chapter offers over 500 titles of books and videos through its bookstore.
