Description
The Baltimore Society of Model Engineers (BSME) celebrates its 80th year of model railroading.

The organization was formed in 1932 with the express purpose to promote and expand the hobby of model railroading. The club has been in its present downtown Baltimore location since 1952. The BSME is the second oldest club in the United States, and a Life member of the NMRA.

The BSME layouts occupy 2500 square feet at our downtown Baltimore headquarters located on the third floor of 225 W. Saratoga street.

Visitors will see model trains and trolleys in O and HO scale; static model displays; and a bell, whistle, builders' plate and headlight from a Pennsylvania Railroad K-4 steam locomotive. On the walls of the layout rooms are heralds from the paint shops of railroads that criss-crossed the United States in the 1950s, as well as photographs from the clubs history and publicity shots from railroad equipment manufacturers.

The HO layout is a Class I double track mainline operation modeling a mid-atlantic route westward towards Ohio. The HO layout also has a trolley system in the major metropolitan city and an interurban system that connects the city with a coal mining town.

The O scale layout is single track operation set in the late steam early diesel era with rolling countryside. The railroad interchanges freight and passengers with the trolley system. The trolley system runs the 65' length of the layout connecting the urban town with a coal mine town on the opposite end of the layout.
